Diddy's Son Receives a UCLA Scholarship

Much buzz the last day or so has been over whether Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs son Justin Dior Combs should accept a full athletic scholarship to play football at UCLA.  ‘Diddy’ whose estimated net worth is at $500 million dollars according to Forbes.  However does Diddy’s great wealth automatically disqualify his son from receiving and accepting an athletic scholarship?  Those that are crying over the fact that Justin Combs received a scholarship are not looking at the achievement and gratification that goes into accepting a scholarship for the athlete and parent.  A high school athlete who aspires to be a college athlete has to put in hours of extra practice to hone in on their sport.  Many times a parent is very influential in guiding a child to not only play but to excel in a sport.  From hitting ground balls on the weekend, to seeking the best private instructors, to giving small tips on the phone after a bad game.  Parents do much of the grit work for many young athletes.  So, to ask Diddy and his son to not accept a scholarship that was earned by athletic achievement, is not only hurtful to Justin; but hurtful to a parent who may be even more excited than his son.

On another note if Diddy wants to still pay for his son's schooling after the fact or give a nice check covering his sons athletic scholarship expenses to UCLA.  I think everyone would be grateful, and it would be a very noble deed.

How to Create A Religious Conversation

The two things that should never be talked about are politics and religion.  Why?  Because one person feels that they need to be right, and begins to push their views on everyone in the conversation.  So instead of an intelligent conversation, it becomes a shouting match that can never be won or even deciphered because emotions play too much of a part.  I chose a scene from *Kevin Hart's "Laugh At My Pain" to attempt to articulate my point of religion instead of it being talked about it, it is thrown on to people.  Watch the first couple of minutes (or the whole thing he is hilarious)

If you watch the first minute or so of that segment from Kevin Hart's "Laugh At My Pain", he touches on my topic to perfection.  But then how do we as disciples create an atmosphere where we can talk about religion without it being forced?  My answer is to be subtle.  Within conversations if the opportunity arises I will say, "Well I believe in God or I am religious", and I use it to further an explanation or just to bring awareness to my audience.  The only problem with my approach is that if the person or audience does not wish to discuss religion in that matter then your attempt was unsuccessful.  But only unsuccessful at the time. Because if you are open and willing to share your religious experiences; they may be more open and comfortable to.  And if they are willing to share then you have just started your religious conversation.

To wrap it all up, when creating a religious or even a political conversation never force the issue with those in whom you are speaking.  Drop subtleties to hint towards your willingness to talk about certain topics, and wait on the response of your audience.  But being patient may take days or months so continue to not force the issue, and like Kevin Hart showed don't be like his Cousin Al.

Best Looking Male Athlete

My colleague and I have decided to engage female viewers a little more by presenting them with an opportunity to respond.  We have come up with a bracket (through the surveying of many women) that presents the top 16 best looking male athletes.  What we are going to do is have our female viewers vote every week on the match-ups until we have a winner. This is an NCAA basketball style tournament.  You will have one week to vote for your favorites.  During the week, we will compile the statistics and leave you with another week to vote on the next match-ups.  A link for voting is provided at the bottom of the bracket.  Enjoy!

Can a Hat Ban Be More about Exclusion than Intrusion?

Recently many Buckhead Bars have adopted a ‘no hat policy’.  Coming from a person who frequents these bars many weekends out of the year, this policy is a little upsetting.  Upsetting because it takes away one’s personal identity to dress as one pleases.  But as I began to dive deeper into this issue, I wondered is this rule more about keeping some out than than attempting to create a upscale nightlife?  Buckhead as many know is a place of wealth and prestige within the greater Atlanta area.  An area enriched with private schools and million dollar homes.  Because I attended one of these private schools I have been absorbed into a small part of the Buckhead community for some time; a community that is majority white and difficult to submerge oneself into as an outsider.   After I left Buckhead last week where I was forced to take my hat off in a few of the places I went.  I wondered could this be an attempt for owners to create a rule that will hamper one group from attempting to include itself with another?  In other words, was this rule created to try and covertly exclude minorities from frequenting Buckhead?

Some may say I am being naïve or looking for something that is not there.  Others may say I have hit on a problem that has existed since overt classism and racism began to dissipate from society.  Whichever side you fall on, it seems strange as more bars are playing hip hop that they would attempt to possibly curtail its more urban customer base.  I pose this question to the masses, are Buckhead bars attempting to be more high class or is this rule attempting to covertly impede the traffic of minorities to Buckhead?

Saturday, January 7, 2012

Although this article is a little overdue, I still felt it fitting to let you in on some of my favorite movies from 2011.  I have not seen every movie from the year 2011, but I have seen enough to garner some favorites.  I’m providing you with my Top 5 picks for the year 2011.

5. Fast Five

Great action and a great twist accompany the best movie in the Fast and Furious franchise.  The fast cars, in depth plot, and interesting but fun cast of characters makes this a very exciting movie to watch.

4. The Help

This movie, set in the Civil Rights Era, is a great tale of how life was as a black maid during the era.  It is an eye opening movie, giving younger generations a chance to see how life was just a short while ago.  Although some of the real life experiences were probably worse than the movie depicts, it surely gets its point across.

3.  Moneyball

Being a baseball nut, Moneyball had to crack my top 5 for the year.  The book was better, as with most movies, bought I thought Brad Pitt did a great job of portraying Billy Bean and his unconventional GM style.

2.  The Eagle

Not one of the most popular movies of the year, The Eagle is a great flick about honor.  Set in Rome’s heyday, this story is bound to keep you interested with a few twists and turns along its miraculous journey.

1. Soul Surfer

I enjoyed this movie so much that after I saw it once, I had to watch at least 50 more times.  Based on a true story, surfer Bethany Hamilton tragically loses her arm in a shark attack.  Through her faith in God, she is able to overcome the tragedy and rediscover her purpose in the world.

Chime in and let me know what your top 5 may be!
